It is difficult to talk about Auckland without talk about "The City of Sail".

Sport

Radical Sports contributed with the fame of Queenstown among young people. The city became a paradise for crazy jumps, rides, and overdose of adrenalin. The unfarmed tourist can choose radical things to do according with the nerves. For example, my classification f Queenstown radical tours goes from "L" meaning little radical to "XXXH" (extra hard). One of the tours we enjoyed very much (classification "X") is one which we went by helicopter to a valley and dropped in the margin of the shoot over river. Following that we entered a river raft and went down the river jumping over waterfalls, evicting rocks, having cold water battles with other raft and much more. Suddenly the river ended and we went through a tunnel carved in the rocks, finishing the ride on a calm part of the river. After changing back into dry cloth we went on a ride in a river jet boat. It goes at incredible speeds in a gorge, passing centimeters far from the gorge walls. The boat does spectacular curves following the river and by the end it does a 360 turn. A barbecue was offered after all and we were taken by bus back to our accommodation. It was a great day tour despite being salty at NZ$ 230 per head.

Wellington

Wellington is also the departure point to Picton on the South Island. TheInterislander (photo) run the crossing with two ferry boats, the Arahura and theAratere. Both are very well fitted with comfortable lounge spaces, bars and restaurants. From the top deck (weather permitting) tourist will have a fantastic view from the city as well as the Bay and the entrance of the sounds near Picton. It is a great trip itself if the weather is clear. If you plan to ride on the top deck, is strongly advisable to wear something warm, because with the ship moving it gets quite cold up there. Wellington as mentioned before is my favourite city in New Zealand and I recommend at least two days there in your trip to New Zealand.

The Culture

The Culture in the region is graced by a large Maori presence. See a dance show, by arts and crafts, or a visit to one of the many Maraes in the region is a must for any happy tourist. The Maoris inhabit the Bay much before Cook called it plenty and the influence can be noted everywhere including sacred places. Along all the extension of the coast till the Town of Whakatane, and on the back to rural areas, the tourist will find plenty of farms and agricultural activities. Cow milking, cattle for beef and fruits are largely cultivated. The Bay of Plenty area is considered the Kiwi Fruit national capital and tourist visits to see the plantations and the processing of the fruit is offered by many producers. During the period of fruit picking and along the year for pruning the region attracts a large number of international travellers in the working holiday program. Honey is also a top produce of the area, each one better than the other.

Pilot Bay

Is the sheltered beach just after the entrance of the canal (photo). It is nice for a picnic with tables, toilets and facilities and also nice for small kids. Just at the back of the beach, on the first parallel street, is the main street of the town and the business centre, where the majority of shops, cafes and restaurants are. Just after Pilot Bay, is the Port of Tauranga, the biggest Import and Export port in New Zealand? It employs a large number of workers and attracts companies in the same sector such as packaging, logistics, etc. Sometimes along the year the port also receives big size cruise ships.

What about a Volcano?

That is right, Auckland has around 50 volcanoes in a "deep sleep situation" but they can wake up at any moment. Auckland literally floats on melted lava due the long and big fight between the tectonic plates of Australia and South Pacific. Because that, Auckland moves to the North about 60 millimeters per year. Anyway, the happy visitor don't need to worry because has been more than 600 year that nothing pyrotechnic has happened .Just for a brief history of Auckland in the past, the region rich in good soils, was a motif of dispute between Maoris X Maoris and then later Maoris X Colonizers.
